Funding for R&D Projects in Technology and Life Science


  • Dr. Hurtenbach has over 30 years of experience in academic research, drug development and public and private funding organizations.
  • She studied Biology in Bonn and Tübingen and holds a diploma degree in Microbiology and a doctorate in Immunology. She gained her scientific qualification at the Max-Planck Institute for Immunobiology in Freiburg, and as a post-doctoral fellow at the Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, New York, and the National Cancer Institute, NIH, Bethesda, Maryland.
  • From 1985 until 1995 she was group leader in preclinical research at Sandoz Pharma, Basel, where she was responsible for animal pharmacology in transplantation, autoimmune disease and inflammation models. Dr. Hurtenbach was involved in the preclinical development of a number of lead compounds. She has authored or co-authored more than 50 scientific publications.
  • In 1996 she joined the Project Management Agency, Health Research, in the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Bonn, where she held several positions in the public funding of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research; 2004 she became Deputy Head of the Department for Biomedicine and Medical Technology and 2007 Interim Head of the Department for Biomedicine. During this time she was involved in all aspects of public funding including development of funding concepts, consulting of applicants, reviewing of scientific proposals, approval of funding money, managing, controlling and evaluation of funded programs, organization of workshops and board meetings, participation in international panel meetings such as the Innovative Medicines Initiative and the Strategy meetings of the International Sequencing Consortia of the Human Genome.
  • Since 2008 Dr. Hurtenbach is Managing Director of SCIECONOMICS Consulting GmbH.
  • Dr. Hurtenbach serves as honorary consultant and reviewer in the business plan competition of the Sparkasse KölnBonn for young entrepreneurs since 2002.
